On October 14, in the city of the Bronx, New York, he was born into the family of his parents, Robert G. Sr. and Virginia A. (Reilly) Merkley. His grandfather was also named Robert G. Merkley. His father’s name was Robert G. Sr., and his mother’s name is Virginia A. (Reilly) Merkley. Both of his parents are named Robert. In 1981, he received his diploma from Fallbrook High School, which was located in California.

Three years later, in 1983, he received his diploma from Jefferson Community College, which was located in Watertown, New York. These two establishments can be found inside the borders of the state of California. After gaining experience at Tilton School for a period of time, he moved on to J. Jill Group in the year 1990 and has remained there ever since. He is currently working there as an information technology professional. This change occurred after he had been employed by Tilton School for a considerable amount of time. His passions included NASCAR, Star Wars, and classic cars, in particular vintage automobiles such as the Chevrolet II that he owned and the 1979 Corvette that belonged to his late father-in-law and was later given to his wife after he passed away.

His interests also included Star Wars and the saga of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. The car is now legally owned by his wife. Before he left this world, both of his parents and his brother, Scott R. Merkley, had previously departed from it. His wife, Stephanie M. (Krauz) Merkley, lives in Salisbury; his daughter, Elaine A. Merkley, lives in Leray, New York; her children, Natalia E. Smith and Alana J. Childs, live in South Carolina; his son, Michael K. Brace, lives in Bristol; his daughter, Kaitlyn N. Brace, lives in Danbury; and his brother also lives in Connecticut.
