Robbie Lucas Obituary, Death –  He was a decent man. Doug Charles, the LCA coach, told the Herald-Leader that he was the best. We both had a great deal of respect for one another and our programs aside from the two hours every so often that we had to compete against one another. And he treated me so nicely. Man, I really detest it. It’s really a tremendous loss. The Somerset coaching staff proposed a lights-on remembrance for Lucas on Monday night at high school football fields throughout Kentucky. “You cannot find a better man or person than him. He didn’t care about Xs and Os, according to Somerset defensive coordinator Jared Swearingen in a message to the coaches.

“His life’s work was to assist the athlete and/or student in achieving success in life. A fantastic coach who was also a far better man has moved on to better things. Lucas, a veteran assistant, took over as head coach at Somerset in 2009 after Jay Cobb abruptly left his position just before the season started. Players advocated on Lucas’s behalf, and the Briar Jumpers won district and regional championships while going unbeaten en route to finishing second to Paducah Tilghman in the Class 3A state final game. After the interim tag was taken off, Lucas led Somerset to five consecutive region championships and participation in the state quarterfinals.

A team led by athletes like quarterback Kaiya Sheron, who is now at Kentucky, and wide receiver Kade Grundy, who is currently playing baseball for Louisville, marked the apex of his career in 2019, though.  After a few years as an assistant at Somerset, Lucas, a player and 1990 alumnus of Lincoln County High School, landed his first head coaching position with the Patriots in 2002. He was fired after two 2-8 seasons and afterwards joined Somerset’s staff again. Lucas discussed his experiences as a young, outspoken head coach during his podcast interview. After being dismissed, I returned and worked as an assistant, which was quite helpful, said Lucas.

“I could see my slip. I could see my weaknesses. I could see the errors. Even though I should have seen them, I was adamant that “We’re going to take this school and we’re going to get better” at the time. And as I was unable to persuade anyone to follow, I returned to Somerset after 17 months. Lucas did a good job of applying those skills, amassing a 118-78 career record with a 114-62 mark at Somerset and eight regional championships. The Briar Jumpers, one of the state’s oldest football programs with a strong 116-season history, have advanced to the state championship game six times. In addition to the 2019 title, they have finished as runners-up four times under John Cain in the 1980s and once under Lucas in 2009.
