Larry Johnson Obituary, Death – We would like to offer our most sincere sympathies to the Johnson family on the passing of Captain Larry “LJ” Johnson, who waged a valiant battle against cancer but ultimately succumbed to the disease. Captain Johnson started his career in law enforcement in 2002 when he joined the Summerville Police Department. Prior to that, he had spent the previous four years working for the Department of Public Safety at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Since his days as a patrolman, Captain Johnson has fought his way up through the ranks to become the chief of our Criminal Investigative Division. His promotion came about as a result of his dedication and hard work. He has worked as a Corporal for the Uniform Patrol Division, a Narcotics Investigator, a Sergeant for the Uniform Patrol Division, a Lieutenant, and as the Division Commander in the past. In addition to completing the FBI’s Carolina Command College, he also has an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix.
This degree was earned in conjunction with his graduation. The Knights of Columbus honored him as Police Officer of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, when the Summerville Police Department chose him for the award. His regular places of worship include The Dignity Project, of which he is quite proud to have been a founding member, as well as the Cathedral of Praise, which is a church located in North Charleston.
Everyone who ever knew Captain Johnson thought of him as a man of God and had a deep love and respect for him. He was held in extremely high esteem by all. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger and was quick to put a smile on the face of everybody he came into touch with, regardless of who they were. He was the kind of person who always had a story to tell.
The persons who work for the Summerville Police Department and those who reside in our area are all more well-rounded now that they have had the opportunity to become acquainted with our brother LJ. As we continue to battle through this difficult time, we ask that you continue to pray for his family as well as our SDP family. Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time.
