The data was provided by the New Orleans Police Department and the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office.

As of the month of October, the number of homicides in New Orleans had already surpassed the total for the previous year, which stood at 221. Only homicides, which are defined as killings that are both intentional and unjustifiable, are included in the total. Homicides make up only a small portion of the overall death toll. It is not uncommon for there to be a weapon present, such as a gun or a knife, in the situation.
Murders are a subset of homicides, but homicides include accidental and negligent killings as well as justifiable killings. For example, a fatal hit-and-run collision would be considered a homicide.

Killings that are done on purpose are considered to be homicides. To this point, it has been determined that 21 more deaths were either required or were the result of negligence on the part of the individuals responsible.
