Jay Mahoney Obituary, Death – Jay Mahoney was born on January 4, 1965 in Greenville, South Carolina, to the parents Mrs. Sheldon S. Hagen and Mr. William “Bill” Mahoney. He was a member of the graduating class of 1983 at J.H. Rose High School, where he competed on the varsity basketball and football teams. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity while he was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also served as President. He started his professional life in the bond department of Wachovia in Winston-Salem, where he worked. Following that, he found employment with Legg Mason, Nexity Bank, and First Winston Securities, Inc.

In 1990, Jay wed Alice Dawkins, the person he had had a crush on since they were in high school; they remained married for more than 30 years. They established their family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and raised their two children there. Jay was a member of the Mission Possible Sunday School Class at Centenary United Methodist Church, which he attended regularly while he was a member of the church. Jay was a very involved father and leader in the Boy Scout troop that his son was a part of, helping to plan and direct camping trips and other activities. Activities such as golfing, sailing, going to UNC sporting events, and working with Jay’s Labrador puppy, Splash, were some of Jay’s favorite things to do.

Jay is survived by his wife, Alice, and their two children, Joseph and Carrie Alice, all of Winston-Salem; his mother, Sheldon Spears Hagen (Jim), of Cary; his father, William “Bill” Mahoney (Sylvia), of Greenville; his sister, Jennifer Mahoney Webb, niece Rachel of Boston, and nephew Toler of Atlanta; brother, Jeff Mahoney (Georgeanna), and nephews Hayes and Wells all of Greenville Jay is also survived by his cherished in-laws, three nieces, and a large number of acquaintances who had known him for a very long time.
