Hugh Evans Obituary, Death – FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2022—MONTGOMERY— Hugh R. Evans, III served as the General Counsel for the Secretary of State’s Office until his death on November 17, 2022. It is with deep regret that Secretary of State John H. Merrill shares the news that Mr. Evans passed away on that date. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the demise of my friend and colleague Hugh Evans,” said Secretary Merrill. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to Hugh’s family and friends and let them know that everyone at the Secretary of State’s Office is thinking about them and sharing their grief.
Hugh joined our group in 2018, and almost immediately he left an unforgettable impression on the kind of place our office has become. It was an honor to get to know him on a personal level and to collaborate with him over the course of these past four years. Because of his many accomplishments, Hugh was well-known and respected across the whole state of Alabama. Hugh Evans graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the Jones School of Law in 1987. Subsequently, he was granted admission to practice law in all Alabama State Courts, in addition to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Hugh Evans is an attorney. Since that time, he has worked for the Honorable Charles Price of the 15th Judicial Circuit between the years of 1987 and 1989, been the City Attorney for Montgomery and served the Montgomery Inn of Court between the years of 1989 and 1992, been an adjunct instructor for the Montgomery Police Academy between the years of 1989 and 1995, worked for the Brannan and Guy P.C. law firm between the years of 1992 and 1995, and worked diligently as the General Counsel of the Alabama Ethics Commission for more than 20 years. Since that time In 2018, Mr. Evans became a member of the staff at the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office, where he has since held the position of General Counsel for the preceding four years.
Mr. Evans is survived by his son, Hugh Raymond Evans IV (who is married to Jessica), his daughter, Amanda Kay Evans Johns (who is married to Daniel), his sister, Russell Evans Lee, his brothers, Wyatt Evans and Clint Evans, and his grandsons, Sawyer, Quinn, Ripley, and Hampton.
