Hugh Evans Obituary, Death – Hugh R. Evans, III served as General Counsel for the Secretary of State’s Office until his death on November 17, 2022. Secretary of State John H. Merrill expresses deep regret that Mr. Evans died on that date. “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my friend and colleague Hugh Evans,” said Secretary Merrill. We want to express our heartfelt condolences to Hugh’s family and friends and assure them that everyone at the Secretary of State’s Office is thinking of them and sharing their grief. Hugh joined our team in 2018, and he quickly made an indelible mark on our office culture.

It has been a privilege to get to know him personally and work with him over the last four years. Hugh’s numerous accomplishments made him well-known and respected throughout Alabama. Hugh Evans received his Juris Doctorate from the Jones School of Law in 1987. He was then admitted to practice law in all Alabama state courts, as well as the Middle District of Alabama and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Hugh Evans is an attorney.

Since then, he has worked for the Honorable Charles Price of the 15th Judicial Circuit from 1987 to 1989, been the City Attorney for Montgomery and served the Montgomery Inn of Court from 1989 to 1992, been an adjunct instructor for the Montgomery Police Academy from 1989 to 1995, worked for the Brannan and Guy P.C. law firm from 1992 to 1995, and diligently worked as the Alabamians’ General Counsel. Mr. Evans has since joined the staff of the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office, where he has served as General Counsel for the past four years. Hugh Raymond Evans IV (married to Jessica), Amanda Kay Evans Johns (married to Daniel), sister Russell Evans Lee, brothers Wyatt Evans and Clint Evans, and grandchildren Sawyer, Quinn, Ripley, and Hampton survive Mr. Evans.
