Edward Verhoff Obituary, Death – We regret to tell you of the passing of our Union Vice President and brother, Firefighter/Paramedic Edward Verhoff, who passed away on Saturday at his home in Albany after finishing his work tour. Ed had a lasting impact on our union that will be felt for many years to come. His commitment to the success and safety of our members was unwavering, and he went out of his way to make sure everyone knew it. Ed quickly progressed through the ranks of our executive committee to his current position as Vice President. Ed’s unwavering commitment to organized labor was one of his pillars of faith. He would attend IAFF conventions and workshops, as well as work with the Albany Labor Federation. He has made several contributions to our union’s improvement.
Aside from his dedicated work for our union and labor, he found time to serve as a Scoutmaster at Boy Scout Troop 1083, where his two kids were following in his footsteps to become Eagle Scouts, which pleased Ed. Ed was a Hibernian, the chairman of Albany’s 14th ward, and a member of the Albany County Democratic Party. After 16 years of service, Ed’s current assignment to the Rescue Squad, stationed at the Arbor Hill Fire Station on C platoon, was his final duty with the Fire Department. Anyone who had ever worked with Ed was expecting to chuckle. He adored the firehouse and the people he worked with.
Ed’s wife and two sons were his biggest loves and passions in life. We don’t grasp your anguish and perplexity, Kim, Edward “Ej,” and Liam. Know that all 260 members of the Albany Fire Department are in your thoughts and prayers. Ed’s wake will be held on Thursday, November 17th, from 4-7 p.m. at Mater Christi Parish. On Friday, November 18th, at 11 a.m., a Roman Catholic liturgy will be celebrated in the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St in Albany.
