He enjoyed spending his spare time playing golf and fishing, two of his favorite hobbies. He was a part of the team that helped organize the Enterprise Junior Open, which was held at the Enterprise County Club and contributed to the popularity of golf.

During his younger years, he was an official for football games and also enjoyed playing baseball and any other sport that featured a competitive element. (Judge) and Jonnie Thompson, and his brother Hardee Thompson and sister Marie Rials all passed away before he did. He is the only member of his immediate family that is still alive today.
